Everyone seems to forget that the E-cores are not only for economy, but also for performance. Just not for low / single threaded performance, that’s what the P-cores are for. No, it is precisely in multithread that those E-cores help compared to more P-cores on the same die size. .

After all, you can store 4 E-cores on the space of 1 P-core. Intel therefore had to choose between 10P cores or 8 P cores and 8 E-cores on an equal size.

According to Intel, 1 E-core can be compared in performance to a Skylake core (so it remains to be seen in practice). a lot more performance than if 2 extra P-cores were chosen instead of 8 E-cores.

For example, look at the 11600K and the 12600K (according to the rumors).

The 11600K has 6 P cores / 12 threads.
The 12600K will soon have 6 P cores / 12 threads (with a rumored 19% higher IPC) with 4 E-cores in addition.

If all rumors are correct, the 12600K will soon be comparable to an 11600K with 19% more IPC and also a 6600K integrated on the same die. Even if Intel is a bit ‘overpromised’ in the rumors, that will still be a big step.

Same for the 12900K, which is basically a 11900K with 19% higher performance and 2x a 6600K on the same die. That too, if the price is right, can become a formidable competitor to eg AMD’s 5900X and possibly even beat the 5950X in certain workloads.
