The fire broke out in Moria on September 9, with about 12,000 people living in the camp, which was several times its intended capacity. The refugees are moving to the new Kara Tepe tent camp, which has just grown up near the port of Mytilene. Several hundred have also moved to a community center run by one of the NGOs.

On Thursday, Greek police began speeding up efforts to relocate asylum seekers from the burned-out camp. Some of them did not want to enter other facilities because they hoped that after the fire they could get off the island and find themselves in other European countries.

All newcomers tested the authorities for coronavirus and placed 214 of them in isolation due to the positive results.

The authorities believe that the fire in Moria was started by the refugees themselves, who were already dissatisfied with the measures taken by the camp administration due to the spread of coronavirus among its inhabitants. Six people have been arrested by the police and now face charges of arson.
