PHOTOS: NASA astronaut captures the passage of Hurricane Genevieve from the International Space Station

Although it eventually weakened and downgraded to a tropical storm, the hurricane still has the potential to cause substantial damage, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned.

NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy, a crew member of the International Space Station (ISS), managed to capture impressive images of the passage of Hurricane Genevieve through the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

The snapshots, taken on August 19, show the moment when the hurricane, now downgraded to a tropical storm, crashes over the coast of Baja California heading north.

In the photos published by Cassidy on Twitter, you can see the eye of the hurricane, surrounded by a ring of powerful electrical storms. At the time, Genevieve’s strong winds stretched for more than 450 kilometers, according the US space agency.

On Tuesday, its Category 4 gusts reached speeds of 209 kilometers per hour, while by Friday its maximum sustained winds had dropped to 80 km / h.

Even though Genevieve has weakened into a tropical storm, still has the potential to cause harm substantial, cause flash floods and landslides, warns the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

A tourist and a rescue worker were already fatalities Genevieve’s passage through the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.
