Photos: George and Charlotte to Easter service for the first time

Without Queen Elizabeth, the British royals attended the traditional Easter service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Sunday. Prince William and his wife Catherine had brought their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte with them.

It was the first time that eight-year-old George and his sister Charlotte (6) were allowed to attend the service. Their brother, Prince Louis of 3, was not there.

Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday that Elizabeth would skip the service. A reason for her absence was not given. It was announced that she was being represented by her son Prince Charles.

Prince Charles looked back on the church service he attended on Maundy Thursday in an extensive message on Instagram on Sunday. He also thought back to his father Prince Philip, who died last year, who accompanied Elizabeth countless times and always read the Easter story.

Charles also cites the Easter story itself in his post as a message of hope in frightened times, such as now due to the war in Ukraine. Millions of people are displaced, tired from their journey, tormented by the past and anxious about the future.

“Over the years, my heart has been broken countless times by the suffering of innocent victims of war,” Charles continues. “Some I have met myself and have told me stories of indescribable tragedy as they had to flee their country and seek shelter far from home.”

But despite all the grief and sometimes inhumane practices of today, Charles finds it “deeply touching” to see how many people open their homes to others in need and how they help those “who suffer such soul-destroying sorrow and misery.” ” help out.

“At Easter, as always, we are reminded of the Lord’s timeless good example of goodness in times of suffering, courage in times of fear and faith in times of despair,” concludes Charles. “His light overcame that dark period. I pray with all my heart that His inspiring example can help all of us to dispel the darkness…”
