Photography and cinema (VII)

There are moments in our life that, without trying, remain in the memory.

The passage of time gives us moments, and our mind takes care, over the years, to beautify them in detail, making us relive every second with nostalgia, dragging us even to melancholy.

The romantic poet William Wordsworth wrote in 1807 “Ode to Immortality. In a few simple verses full of delicacy and depth, he speaks of the desire to relive the experience of a splendid but unattainable past, of the ephemerality of life and of the youth that will never return.

In 1961, the writer and film director Elia Kazan would be inspired by this poem of hope to direct “Splendor in the grass”, turning it into a masterpiece. Kazan criticizes the puritan and rigid American moral, while, using Wordsworth’s poem, extols the value of memories even if our dreams are not fulfilled.

The splendid soundtrack by David Amram and the powerful photography by Boris Kaufman in intense colors, help to enhance the evocative and nostalgic atmosphere of the film.

“Although nothing can restore us to the hour of splendor in the grass, of glory in flowers, we must not grieve, because beauty subsists in memory.”
