Photographer Captures Rare Phenomenon of Rainbow Rings Created by Pollen Scattering in Finland

Jakarta

Mikko Peussa, a photographer in Finland, has succeeded in capturing the rare phenomenon of rainbow rings. He captured this sighting on May 30 not far from his home in Turku, western Finland.

The rainbow ring is often called the pollen corona or pollen corona. Quoting Spaceweather.com, this rainbow ring is created by sunlight scattering pollen in the air. The star-like sparkles that appear in and around the shining ring are pollen grains that can vary in size.

The effect is created by sunlight scattering, or separating into individual wavelengths, as it hits the pollen surface. Some of the wavelengths interfere with or bump into each other, so that only certain colors reach the observer’s view. This is known as a diffraction pattern.

The pollen in the example above, comes from the pine tree (Pinus sylvestris). Under a microscope, these pollen grains look like tiny Mickey Mouse heads. Their ‘ears’ are actually a pair of air sacs that help the grain float in the wind. The air pockets align with the same wind direction, which helps create the diffraction patterns and causes the rings to have a slightly elliptical shape.

Pollen coronas only appear when pollen concentrations are very high and can only be seen clearly when the Sun or Moon is partially obscured. Photographers like Peussa often use filters to block extra light and make colors stand out more than usual on a sunny day.

Pine pollen is also known to create a much larger but equally unusual visual phenomenon. In January, researchers revealed that large swarms of tiny pollen grains created huge sea eddies like algae on the surface of the Baltic Sea in Poland.

Research shows that pollen concentrations and the length of the pollen season increase as a result of increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide from human activities. So, pollen coronas could become a more common phenomenon in the future.
