Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS (the abbreviation comes from the English name amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons exit from the brain to the spinal cord, and from the spinal cord are distributed to muscles throughout the body. They then gradually degenerate until the person eventually loses the ability to move muscles. Depending on which area of the body is affected, a person may gradually lose the ability not only to move, but also to speak, eat and breathe. Most people die within two years of diagnosis. The exact cause of the disease is still unknown.
