With the premiere on March 1, director Juras Poškus’ comic drama “The sun shines for 24 hours” with Andri Keiša in the lead role is coming to the big screens. The film’s screen life begins with a sold-out premiere at the “Splendid Palace” cinema and will continue on a ten-day tour of Latvian cinemas, where both the director and the film’s actors – Andris Keišs, Intars Rešetins, Kristīne Krūze-Hermane and Kaspars Znotiņš – met the audience.
After the premiere on March 1 and special screenings in several cinemas in Riga, the director and actors will meet the audience in all major regional cinemas – March 4 in Liepāja, March 5 in Talso and Ventspils, March 6 in Cēsis and Valmiera, March 7 in Ogre, March 9 in Sigulda . Screenings are also planned in Jelgava, Madona, Smiltene and Aizkraukle at the beginning of March, in the long term it is planned to show the film in all cinema screening locations in Latvia. When meeting with the audience, the filmmakers invite to a conversation about the behind-the-scenes of the film’s production, as well as the general human theme of the film. “Every question ‘what next?’ is like a challenge, because it makes a person think”, says the director of the film, Juris Poškus.
The film Saule Spīd 24 hours tells the story of businessman Mārtiņas, who has achieved the dream of a Latvian: he has a house, a girlfriend, a car, and a lot of money – from the moment he sells his successful business. The question arises – what next? On his 40th birthday, the hero of Jura Poškus’s film decides to go on an adventurous trip to the North Pole with his friends in order to add at least some sharpness to his seemingly monotonous life.
Even before the official premiere, the film has already evoked the first reactions of critics. Publicist Rvins Varde admits that “there is so much whiskey in the film that the film undeniably has a high viscosity”, but poet and cultural journalist Toms Treiberg evaluates the film philosophically: “Sometimes adventures don’t have to have a specific destination and the main thing is not the end point, but the journey itself . In the case of Jura Poškus’ film, this is indeed the case.” On the other hand, cinematographer Elīna Reiter comments: “To make a potential box office hit, you don’t need much at all – just a director who perfectly knows the techniques of creating cinema humor, and a taciturn Keisha.” It should be added that the actor Andris Keišs has claimed that in his filmography, which includes about 30 films, it is Mārtiņš’s character Jura Poškus in the movie Saule śpid 24 hours that is the “best”.
Director Juris Poškus makes films rarely, but each of them leaves a mark in Latvian cinema history; the feature films Monotonija (2007) and Kolka Cool (2011) have made film critics appreciate that the director works with his own special method, which allows for purposeful construction of interesting characters through close cooperation with actors. The ensemble cast of the film The Sun Shines 24 Hours includes an international team – the Norwegian actors Tronds Halbo and Jepe Beks Laursen, well-known in Europe, and the film’s co-producer Vlads Ketković in a comic episodic role. The film was shot in Riga and Tukuma region, as well as beyond the Arctic Circle, in the Russian arctic town of Tiksi, whose ironic portrayal in the film has now acquired a new, harsher context.
The cinematographer of the film is the Norwegian Mārtins J. Edelstēns, the scriptwriters are Juris Poškus and Aleksandrs Rodionovs, the producer is Madara Melberga, the artist is Toms Grīnbergs, the editing directors are Paula Popmane and Juris Poškus. The film was produced by studio FA Filma, its distributors in Latvia are studio Riverbed and association Kinopunkts. The film’s financial supporters are the National Cinema Center, the Ministry of Culture, the State Cultural Capital Fund and Creative Europe Media.
