For several years now, the folk dance ensemble “Dancis” in cooperation with the photographer Jurģis Rikveili has been publishing its own calendar, in which the dancers themselves feel like models, showing the traditional and the folk in a new, contemporary way. Also at the beginning of this year, a new calendar was released, in which dancers and the photographer creatively surprise with ways to transform the Latvian folk costume.

According to Facebook photographer Jurģis Rikveilis, this time the authors of the idea for “Danča’s fashion calendar” are Lauma Šime and Dārta Helēna Jaunalksne.
The collaboration between the dance group and the photographer started five years ago. “I watched the performance of the young dancers at the annual ball of the TDA” Dancis “with surprise. It was already quite clear at the time that this idea should not be forgotten and used at the right time and place. True, the time to realization was long, but the result was so interesting that the complex organization was worth it.

“There are so incomprehensible Latvian national costumes photographed in many ways and photo sessions, but it still inspires! And then the next time will come when something completely unthinkable right now will be created again,” the photographer says.

Jurģis Rikvelis has previously created interesting photo sessions for such dance groups as “Rotaļa”, “Zelta sietiņš”, “Vizbulīte”, “Vektors” and others.
The Folk Dance Ensemble “Dancis” of the University of Latvia is one of the oldest dance ensembles in Latvia. Last year it was 75 years since its foundation. Rolands Juraševskis has been the leader of the team since 1987.
