Nulla dies sine linea – No days without a line! With the motto of the Latvian Academy of Arts (LAA), various events marking the centenary of the Academy of Arts will be implemented during 2019. One of them is an unusual format exposition in the exhibition hall “Arsenals” of the Latvian National Museum of Art.

The starting point for the concept of the exhibition is the Plato Academy, which in ancient Greece was a definite model of teaching in the discipline of philosophy. The academy itself was located near Athens, and the free atmosphere around the olive grove was of particular importance here, leading to philosophical theses and judgments as a result of negotiations and exchanges of views.

In modern terminology, the word “academic” sometimes takes on a heavy hue, which is why the format of the exhibition will be a way to see it in its original sense – a free, creative thought process. Inspired by this example, the exhibition will convey the atmosphere and spirit of the place of the Latvian Academy of Arts, creating an exposition that will change during the exhibition, as the works of art on display will be supplemented and developed. More than 40 LAA students and recent graduates will take part in the exhibition, creating works that reflect the range of interests of young artists in creative research. The novelty of the exhibition is its open format, in which the action will take place. In each of the sections of the exhibition, spectators of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in the creation of works of art, as well as to experience the magic of the virtual reality garden.

A live archive will be open on certain days throughout the exhibition, inviting former and current students, faculty and staff to share their personal photo archives documenting the life of the academy. Under the guidance of young researchers, these materials will be described and demonstrated during the exhibition, supplemented weekly.

In order to emphasize the interaction between the creative space and the place of creation of art objects, a special architecture has been created in “Arsenāls”. The openwork structure and garden atmosphere on the second floor of the hall will be a place where talks will take place with the Academy graduates every Saturday, getting acquainted with personal stories about study time and its succession in professional activities, sometimes not related to art. Every Sunday there will be creative workshops led by the academy lecturers. Even in this room, the study process will be held for the students of the academy, who will also be able to join the visitors of the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open until November 17.
