Photo of the day: Thousands of Poles come out in support of EU membership
Thousands of Poles gathered tonight in central Warsaw in support of the country’s EU membership and to protest the Constitutional Tribunal’s decision not to recognize some of the union’s laws and rulings on Polish territory. The foreign ministry commented on Saturday that Poland continues to respect EU law, and the judges’ decision meant that “forms of interpretation or application when it violates the Constitution” are unacceptable. Reuters called the incident an “existential crisis for the union”, and France and Germany made a joint statement that Poland has a legal and moral obligation to fully and unconditionally follow EU rules.
