A photo of a bruised-faced Ukrainian woman breastfeeding her one-and-a-half-month-old child on her hospital bed has gone viral on social media. This image was taken at Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, located in kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. The baby’s father is also injured: all three have just survived the explosion of a shell. The windows exploded inside their apartment. “When I sat down to feed my baby Victoria, I lifted my legs up, like this, and covered her with a blanket to keep her warm. I think that’s why my daughter survived…”explains Olga, mother of little Victoria.
Alerted by the cries of his wife, the girl’s father rushes towards them both, and alerts the emergency services. “I tried to calm Olga down. She was seated, leaning forward. I took the blanket off, she lifted her head and blood ran from her face and forehead onto the baby.”explains Dmytro, father of Victoria.
“The mother suffers from multiple deep cuts, describes Anatoly Tymoshenko, a doctor at the hospital. There were about 25 on the body and head, all from shards of glass.”
Protected by his mother, the baby escaped with a few scratches and bruises. The family is taken care of at the children’s hospital in Okhmatdyt, where care continues despite the bombardments.
