The film was scheduled to premiere this spring, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “What the quiet Gerda knows” is included in the main competition program of Riga IFF. The film has also been nominated for the National Film Award “Kristaps the Great” in nine categories, including the main one – “Best Feature Film”.
The events of the film take place in a manor. To maintain it, the owners have created a boarding house, which is in the mood of the 1930s and is not allowed to use modern means of communication – computers, mobile phones, the Internet. All the attributes of modern life must be left at the entrance, including the desire to communicate. One of the motto of the boarding house is: “If possible, shut up!” The guests of the boarding house are bright people from different countries who have come to this remote place to escape the information and technological pressures of the 21st century. The three-week heat wave has brought many to the brink of insanity. The situation is so deadly serious and at the same time confusing that it becomes its opposite – a comedy.
The director believes that much of what we do not express in words or deeds is manifested in our fantasies. Paradoxically, they represent our true nature more vividly than everyday life. “The dual world of fantasy is incomprehensible, but it determines more than we can imagine,” says Pashkevich.
The screenwriter and producer of the film is the director Jevgēņijs Paškēvičs himself, the cameraman – Andrejs Rudzāts, the creative group also includes artist Jurģis Krāsons, costume designer Keita, make-up artist Ilze Trumpe, executive producer Ilze Krūmiņliepa.
Starring a bright ensemble of actors from Latvia, Russia, Estonia and Lithuania – Gundars Āboliņš (pastor Hector), Inese Pudža (Marija), Gatis Gāga (Pēteris), Andris Apinis (Andrejs), Russian star Leonīds Jarmoļņiks (Baron von Fitinghofs), Lithuania actors Severija Jaseltauskaite (Baroness Emma), Leonards Pobedonoscevs (Freds), Arvīds Dapšis (businessman), popular Estonian actresses Merle Palmiste (Stefania) and Karta Tammjarve (Frieda). Filming took place in Latvia – in Riga, Talsi, Tukums, Dundaga, Iecava and elsewhere.
“What the Silent Gerda Knows” is the third feature film by director Yevgeny Pashkevich. The previous one, “Golf Stream Under an Ice Hill”, made in 2011, won “Kristaps the Great” as the best feature film, with both film director and cinematographer Gints Bērziņš, artists Jurģis Krāsons and Pāvels Parhomenko, and sound director Anrijs Krenbergs receiving separate awards.
