To ensure sustainability in long-distance transportation, the international transport and logistics services company “Hegelmann Group” has ordered 150 “Iveco S-Way LNG” and 10 “Iveco S-Way CNG” tractors. They will complement the company’s green car fleet, which already has 20 “Iveco” cars powered by liquefied natural gas, or LNG, which have enabled the company to achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions over the past few years.

The sustainability strategy has prompted the company “Hegelmann Group” to once again invest in the advanced LNG/CNG technologies of the European market leader. In fact, already today the “Iveco S-Way” LNG/CNG car, which runs on biomethane, is able to operate carbon neutrally in the “well to wheel” cycle.

“The Hegelmann Group has seen for itself that the Iveco S-Way LNG is a viable sustainable car. They initially purchased 20 units, but have now significantly expanded their natural gas fleet. We are proud to support their transport decarbonisation efforts – after all, this is also the goal of “Iveco”, which has allowed us to be pioneers of natural gas technology in our field for more than 25 years,” says Ernests Jakubonis, sales manager of the Baltic States representative office of “Iveco SpA”.

CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 95 percent

The machines ordered by the “Hegelmann Group” are 4×2 standard tractors with a spacious “Active Space” cab and a raised roof. They are powered by a 460-horsepower “Cursor 13” natural gas engine complying with “Euro VI Step E” emission standards.

LNG models are equipped with two 540 liter LPG tanks mounted on each side of the vehicle. Depending on the location, their total capacity is at least 390 kilograms of liquefied Bio-LNG, which can be driven up to 1,600 kilometers. CNG vehicles have four fuel tanks and they are located on the left and right sides. Each has a gravimetric filling volume of 160 kilograms, which provides a total range of up to 670 kilometers.

Biomethane enables the Hegelmann Group not only to significantly reduce nitrogen dioxide and soot emissions, but also to lower CO2 emissions by up to 95 percent compared to diesel analogues. On the other hand, if biomethane is produced from animal waste, it is even possible to achieve a negative carbon footprint.

“The decision had to be taken after a detailed assessment of the situation – LNG prices are currently significantly higher, but we are focusing on the long-term perspective and our goal is to offer sustainable transport,” says Andreas Schmitt, CEO of the German company Hegelmann.

In addition to the low consumption, “Iveco S-Way” LNG/CNG vehicles also surprised representatives of the “Hegelmann Group” with less engine noise. Natural gas engines are significantly quieter than diesel engines, which means they are perfect for low-traffic areas and delivery at night.

Another advantage is that gas-powered “Iveco” cars can also be used in ecozones. For example, they are not subject to the ban on lorries driving at night on the A12 motorway in the Inn Valley in Austria.

Abundant additional equipment

Fulfilling the wishes of the “Hegelmann Group”, the new “Iveco S-Way” LNG tractors are equipped with useful additional equipment that makes the daily life of drivers easier. A pleasant environment in the cabin is provided by the cold climate package, fully automatic air conditioning and auxiliary heating, a luxury driver’s seat with lumbar support and three levels of heating.

The cabin is made even more functional by a top-quality refrigerator with freezer, a thermally insulated storage box, as well as two additional USB ports and a 230-volt socket. Comfort in the cabin is ensured by side window sunshades, large luggage compartments and a wide, comfortable continuous bed. Custom equipment also includes tire pressure monitoring system, axle load display, LED headlights and more.
