Dangerous security conditions in Kiev and other major Ukraine In recent months, civilians have had a number of opportunities to learn the basics of protection, reports Radio Svoboda. The training is offered by both official state institutions and various private military groups and political organizations, which played a significant role in the first years of Russia’s military aggression, when in 2014 the Ukrainian army was surprised unprepared and unable to respond properly.
The government of President Volodymyr Zelensky, which has received criticism from critics for not preparing civilians for a possible Russian invasion, passed a law allowing civil defense organizations to be formally formed. The Law on National Resistance Organizations entered into force on 1 January and the Territorial Defense Forces were established on its basis.
The plan is to form 25 brigades in almost all administrative regions of the country and attract 130 thousand reservists. Already at the end of last year, the army began to conduct military exercises for civilian volunteers on weekends, Radio Svoboda explains.
At the same time, the far-right National Corps, which has brought together Donbass war veterans from various volunteer battalions, is also controversial among training providers.
It has been reported that there have been concerns about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine since November. In Russia at Ukraine the gathering of troops and equipment is observed at the border, the number of troops deployed is estimated at 127 thousand. Moscow, for its part, is demanding special “security guarantees” from the United States and NATO, which include NATO’s non-enlargement to the east and the withdrawal of forces from the alliance’s newest members, otherwise promising “military technical measures”.
Russia already in 2014 occupied the Ukrainian-owned Crimea Peninsula and Russian-backed armed gangs have taken over parts of eastern Ukraine, so the war in Ukraine has been going on for seven years.
