On the evening of Tuesday, May 17, one of the most prestigious events in the film industry opened in France – Cannes Film Festival. This year, one of the oldest festivals in Europe is taking place for the 75th time.

The Cannes Film Festival opened this year with the premiere of director Michel Hazanavich’s zombie comedy Final Cut. The film was made as a remake of the 2017 Japanese film “One Cut of the Dead”. Its choice at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival initially sparked a wave of outrage, as its first name was “Z”, which is also a symbol used by the Russian occupiers during the invasion of Ukraine. Following a letter from the Ukrainian Film Institute to Hazanavich, the film was renamed “Final Cut”.
However, already after the premiere, Hazanwich’s work has earned the recognition of critics and viewers. “Final Cut” has already been dubbed “smart and intoxicatingly entertaining,” but at the premiere, the audience rated it with four minutes of standing time.
However, the opening of the Cannes Film Festival was highlighted by an unannounced speech by Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, who broadcast a video from Kiev to the guests of the ceremony.
“We will win this war,” Zelensky said, adding that the film industry must not remain silent.
We remind you that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Cannes Film Festival was changed for two years – the 2020 festival did not take place at all, but in 2021 it was postponed to July. This year, the festival has returned to the traditional dates of the second half of May and takes place from May 17 to 28.
We remind you that traditionally there is also a Latvian pavilion in Cannes, where representatives of the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA), the National Cinema Center and the Latvian Association of Film Producers work. In particular, the NCC has prepared a catalog of the latest and upcoming Latvian films for the Cannes Film Market to work with film distributors and other international partners, but in cooperation with the Latvian Animation Association, a publicity publication has been created that summarizes the latest Latvian animated films and projects.
