It was more of a coincidence that photographer George Steinmetz chose to portray New York from above in 2014 for his project. It was only when he was in the air that he realized that it was the perfect time to take a snapshot of the metropolis, as it was at that time in one of the greatest phases of construction and development in many decades. “Maybe it’s naive to call ignorance an advantage, but seeing the city from the air with a fresh view was a chance to show New York in ways that even die-hard local patriots would find unusual,” Steinmetz says his approach.
One way or another, he succeeded in creating an illustrated book that reflects the dynamism and fast pace of New York as well as islands of calm and everyday life.
