The pier is not only the largest hydraulic structure in the port, but also a cargo handling site, so its renovation is especially important for both port security and efficient operation, informs Freeport of Ventspils administration.
Unlike the South Pier, which is a public place, the North Pier is a restricted area due to the handling of cargo in its vicinity. Cargo handling will continue throughout the construction period, which means that the work must be carried out in accordance with safety requirements and in close cooperation with port companies.
This summer, an access road to the red light sign of the North Pier was built on the pier, asphalt concrete pavement was installed in part of the building, a stone burial was installed around the “head” of the pier, a reinforced concrete retaining wall was installed and other works were continued.
The reconstruction of the pier is performed by JSC “BMGS“, a works contract was awarded for 12.86 million euros.
The North Pier in Ventspils is one of the most strategically important hydraulic structures in the port – a one and a half kilometer long structure that stretches from the mainland to the sea and protects the port from waves, ice and sand deposits. Ventspils ports moles in their current form built more than 100 years ago. The last restoration and reconstruction works at the North Pier were carried out from the 70s to the 90s of the last century, but now the most extensive restoration works of the pier are planned.
Ventspils Freeport Authority is currently implementing five projects co-financed by EU funds: “Access roads to terminals and industrial zones in the territory of Ventspils Freeport” (total eligible costs 19.86 million euros, EU co-financing up to 16.88 million euros); “Reconstruction and renovation of Ventspils Freeport hydraulic structures” (total eligible costs 18.14 million euros, EU co-financing up to 15.42 million euros); as well as the construction of three industrial buildings with a total estimated cost of € 16.4 million, of which EU co-financing is € 3.6 million.
Construction works at the North Pier are carried out and financed by project no. 6.1.1.0/17/I/003 “Reconstruction and renovation of hydraulic structures of the Freeport of Ventspils”, the implementation of which takes place in accordance with the operational program “Growth and employment “6.1.1. Objectives of specific support” To increase the level of security of major ports and to improve the mobility of the transport network “.
