Berlin protests against Covid-19 restrictions

Thousands of people took part in an unauthorized demonstration in Berlin on Sunday against the restrictions imposed on Covid-19, and clashes with police and the detention of some 600 demonstrators.

Police estimate that about 5,000 people took part in the demonstration. They gathered in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin and marched through Türgarten Park to the Brandenburg Gate.

Local authorities banned a number of demonstrations planned over the weekend, including protests by the Querdenken (Non-Traditional or Later Thinking) movement, which in Germany proved to be the strongest voice in protest against quarantine restrictions and active conspiracy theories, denying pandemics facts.

But protesters disobeyed the police ban.

In May, Germany eased much of the restrictions imposed in the fight against the pandemic, including the reopening of restaurants and bars. However, many activities, including dining indoors and in hotels, require proof of vaccination against Covid-19, recovery from the disease, or a recent negative Covid-19 test.

Demonstrations against the restrictions imposed in the fight against the pandemic have also taken place elsewhere in Europe.

In France, more than 200,000 people took part in such protests on Saturday, while in Italy, about 80,000 people protested last weekend.
