The film “Silence Maria” tells about the last years of the life of the theater and film actress Marija Leiko (1887 – 1938), when the silent film star, who won fame in Europe, returned. to the Soviet Union to take care of her. grandson, and for a while he was the manager of the Latvian theater “Skatuve” in Moscow as an actor. However, the boldness and ideas of the actress soon met the reality of the Soviets, and Maria Leiko had to understand that the promises of the local authorities were just cold calculations. Together with other “Skatuve” actors, in 1938 Leiko became victims of the “Latvian operation” implemented by the Stalinist regime.
The film “Silence of Mary” directed by Dāvjas Sīmanis was shown for the first time at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it received the Ecumenical Jury Award.
Since the film, having stood up to strong competition, is also included in the Forum program of the festival, it is no less important for the professionals of the cinema industry. The performance of Dāvjas Sīmanis and his team is highlighted by the fact that “Maria’s Silence” is a biographical story that is contrary to the general idea of heroism.
Maria Leiko is played by Olga Šepicka-Slapjuma, for whom this role is a return to the stage and screens after a long break. The role of the actress who plays Marija Leiko has been largely connected to the theater, however, a special story connects her to the director Dāva Sīmani. One of the first film roles of Olga Šepickas-Slapjumas was in the film “Cilvēkas diens” (dir. Yevgēnijs Paškēvičs, 1989), where the cameraman was the father of Dāvis Sīmanis – Dāvis Sīmanis senior. From that time, the director “Mary of silence” also remembered the role player Leiko. Šepicka-Slapjuma herself has been publicly satisfied with the opportunity to return to acting with the role of Marija Leiko.
