The Phoenix City Council has announced the launch of the Neighborhood Park Improvement Program, which will see an investment of $1.5 million for improvement projects in local parks. This program is funded by the recently approved General Obligation Bond (GO Bond) Program and is designed to support minor capital improvements in neighborhoods in each city council district, with the goal of revitalizing local parks and strengthening community engagement.
“The Neighborhood Park Improvement Program is not just about funding, but about fostering community participation to tailor park improvements to the specific needs of neighborhoods throughout the city. “This investment is an important step toward revitalizing our neighborhoods and increasing access to quality parks for all Phoenix residents,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
Until November 8, 2024, eligible neighborhood organizations will be able to submit their project proposals online. To be considered, proposals must relate to a park located within the City of Phoenix, and the applicant organization must be registered with the Department of Neighborhood Services. Organizations that are not yet registered can do so through the website www.phoenix.gov/nsd/programs/neighborhood-coordination.
Projects selected for funding will be announced in early 2025, and all approved improvements must be completed within the GO Bond Program timeline, which will run from 2024 to 2029, under the supervision of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
“We are excited to launch this program and provide resources to our neighborhoods to improve their parks. We believe these improvements will have a positive impact on our communities and create more opportunities for residents to enjoy outdoor spaces. We hope to see innovative proposals that strengthen our parks and unite communities,” said Cynthia Aguilar, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Complaint line
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department has launched a new 24-hour telephone service designed to allow residents to report violations of the Code of Conduct in city parks. This service, accessible through the number 602-534-9919, allows citizens to express their concerns and contact Park Rangers, who will respond to reports based on availability.
The service is active 24/7 and offers park visitors a direct avenue to report any violations that occur within park boundaries. When calling, residents will be assisted by an operator who will record the complaint and send it to the Park Ranger team, who will evaluate the report and respond when possible, according to the priorities at that time.
