Foivos Ioannidis breathed his last at the age of 88. He was a lawyer and a politician, he was the deputy minister of the PASoK, while he was arrested during the dictatorship.
The news of his death was announced by his son, Yiannis Ioannidis. In a post he made on Facebook he says: “A full life ended just before “Christ is Risen”. Our father Phoebus Ioannidis died last night. As he had chosen, he will be buried in his hometown of Sitia at a time to be announced soon.”
His political career
Phoivos Ioannidis was first elected MP for Lasithi with PASOK in June 1989. He was re-elected in the elections of 1990, 1993, 199 and 2000
For the first time he became deputy minister (of Health, Welfare and Social Insurance) in the government of Andreas Papandreou from October 13, 1993 to September 15, 1995.
In the first government of Simitis in January 1996, Ioannidis took over as Deputy Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, for a short-lived period, from January 22 to February 1, 1996.
For the last time he was deputy minister in the Simitis government, from October 30, 1998 to April 13, 2000 (Labour and Social Insurance).
In 2004 he retired from politics.
Statement of condolence by N. Androulakis
“One of the most important protagonists of the anti-dictatorship struggle, Phoebus Ioannidis is no longer with us” says in his statement of condolence on the death of the former MP and minister, the president of PaSoK, Nikos Androulakis.
As Mr. Androulakis F. Ioannidis points out: “He served the democratic party with devotion and his political path was characterized by bravery, selflessness and his belief in high ideals and values.
He was sentenced to eleven years in prison by the Extraordinary Military Court of Chania, for his resistance action against the junta and after the restoration of the Republic he was a founding member of the New Political Forces. In 1989, he was elected for the first time as a Member of Parliament for Lasithi.
He was Deputy Minister of Social Insurance and Deputy Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology in the governments of Andreas Papandreou and Kostas Simitis”.
And ends by expressing: “My sincere condolences to his family.”
