Philosophy of Stoicism: ‘

“The philosophy arose in chaotic times of great setbacks,” says Tuitert. “And it is now perceived that way. It is a guiding philosophy.” Something that young people need, according to him. “Stoicism originated in 300 BC. A turbulent time when Alexander the Great had just started his world empire and had also died. There was a need for a practical philosophy. I think the best description of Stoicism is: how do you stand firm in the storm of life? How do you deal with pandemics that also took place then, with wars; how do you continue to act wisely.”

Self-reflection

“Stoicism is thinking about doing the right thing. Living according to nature – not walking around naked, but nature, God and fate equal reason,” says Tuitert. “As humans, we are blessed with reason, we can reflect on ourselves. We can use our mind to create something beautiful socially with each other. We are not concerned with external things, it is about the only thing that is really ours: our inner institutions.”

Tuitert tries to convey this at schools, among other things, something that can be difficult, among teenagers whose emotions run in all directions. “They are busy with external things, but that is not surprising at that age. It is not the case that this is not allowed: you are allowed to achieve things, be in love. It is about a judgment of the situation and a wrong way of thinking. If someone insults you, you can react – but then you become complicit and get carried away. If you want to do better, you think about why it affects you.”

Accept reality

Holding back emotions and looking at your own actions: that is important, according to Tuitert. “The whole ‘counting to ten’ thing before you react comes from stoicism! It’s all about the wisest course of action. And in many cases, the first, emotional impulse is not the wisest way to act.”

So how should a 23-year-old who can’t find a home deal with his situation from the perspective of Stoicism? “The economic situation is not up to you, you have to accept it. Not accepting reality creates frustration and negative emotions. You can only look at yourself to see how you can make the best of it, take fate into your own hands. Start searching, talk to your relationships. Don’t sit back, but spend a lot of time on your studies, for example, find that fantastic job or do something you love and make something beautiful out of it. The only thing you can do is focus on yourself to target.”
