Filipina make history in Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Philippines won their first gold medal since their participation in the Olympics in 1924.
The Philippines’ first gold at the Olympics was donated by lifter, Hidilyn Diaz. Diaz to be the best in the branch Lift weights the women’s 55kg number in the match held at the Tokyo International Forum, Tuesday (26/7/2021).
Diaz recorded a total lift of 224 kg from 97 kg in the snatch and 127 kg in the clean & jerk. This incision is also a new record in the Olympics.
Diaz outperformed Chinese lifter Liao Qiuyun who made a total lift of 223kg (97 kg in the snatch and 126 in the clean & jerk).
Liao Qiuyun had to put up with the silver gain. Meanwhile, the bronze went to the athlete of Kazakhstan, Zulfiya Chinshanlo who made a total lift of 213kg (90kg in the snatch and 123 in the clean & jerk).
Diaz seemed so touched by this achievement. A 30-year-old woman cries on the podium while singing the Philippine national anthem after winning gold.
This achievement makes Diaz currently the only Filipino athlete who is able to win two medals at the Olympics. Previously, he was able to win silver at the 2016 Olympics.
The additional gold from Diaz brings the Philippines to a total of 11 medals since its first participation in the Olympics in 1924. The details are one gold, three silver and seven bronze.
To in Tokyo 2020 Olympics alone, the Philippines is currently collecting one gold and one bronze. The Philippines occupies the 16th position in the medal standings.
