The Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte (75) is not to be trifled with. He is known for his tough fight against drug gangs in the country. But now his focus is on Covid-19. Duterte makes every effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

In a broadcast on Wednesday, he directed the security forces in his country to shoot rioters during the curfew. “My orders to the police and the military are: If there is trouble or fighting and your life is in danger, shoot them.” Then Duterte turned directly to the possible Corona rioters: “Instead of causing trouble, I’ll send you to the grave.”

The poor accuse the government of neglect

Shortly before Duterte’s speech, around two dozen people were arrested in a poor district of the capital Manila after protests against the government. They had accused the government of not providing food aid to the poor.

Human rights organizations sharply criticized Duterte’s statements and urged the government to provide urgently needed aid instead of threatening violence. “Fatal, uncontrolled violence should never be used in response to an emergency like the coronavirus pandemic,” said Amnesty International.

Police chief backs away
Filipino police chief Archie Gamboa appeased Thursday that the officials would not shoot troublemakers. The president only exaggerated to make it clear that the law had to be observed in these times of crisis.
