Philippine President Duterte Competes With His Daughter For Vice Presidential Chair

MANILA – President Filipina Rodrigo Duterte looks set to compete with his daughter in a bid to become the country’s vice president in next year’s presidential election. This is the latest development in Philippines presidential election which is expected to be dominated by family dynasties instead of policy reform.

Daughter Duterte , Sara Duterte-Carpio, registered her candidacy in next year’s election on Saturday and has been named the vice-presidential candidate for Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the late dictator who competed for president .

The alliance has alarmed human rights activists. Duterte and Marcos are one of the top political dynasties in a country beset by patronage and corruption.

The race got even more chaotic on Saturday, when Duterte’s longtime aide, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, changed his candidacy for president after previously running for vice president.

Shortly after, Duterte’s communications secretary told local press that the 76-year-old leader, who last month vowed to retire from politics, would formally announce his plans on Monday to run for vice president against his daughter. New York Post, Sunday (11/14/2021).

As president, Duterte’s constitutional term is only six years and cannot run for re-election, but can seek a lower position.

During his tenure, Duterte attracted international attention for his policies against drugs. More than 6,000 drug suspects have been killed and 289,000 arrested since Duterte launched a massive campaign against drugs after becoming president in 2016. This has alarmed Western governments and human rights groups.
