A member of the Philippine police was ‘killed’ by a rooster during a raid on illegal cockfighting in Northern Samar province.

Lieutenant Christine Bolok was attacked by a rooster, wounded by a sharp knife with a razor blade attached to the chicken’s leg.

The knife gashed his left thigh, slicing off his femoral artery, one of the main arteries in the body that is located in the thigh. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cockfighting has been banned during the coronavirus outbreak.

Provincial police chief Colonel Arnel Apud told the AFP news agency that the incident was “really unlucky”, calling it “unexplainable bad luck”.

“I couldn’t believe it when I first heard this report. This is the first time in my 25 years as a police officer that I have lost a member to fighting cock spurs.”

The police chief also sent “deepest sympathy” to the victims’ families, said PNA.

Three people were arrested as well as seven fighting roosters, two spur knives and 550 Philippine pesos (around Rp.160,000) were confiscated, PNA reported.

Three other suspects are still at large.

Cockfighting is very popular in the Philippines and is usually used as a betting material for a number of people.
