Philippe Wahl’s Visit to Lozère Sparks Labor Concerns and Demands – CGT and Sud-Solidaires Ready to Meet

Philippe Wahl is in Lozère, this Friday April 12, 2024. Before the inauguration of the Mende post office and a time of discussion with elected officials “on the transformation of La Poste in Lozère”, he will meet staff representatives from 8 to 9:45 a.m. The CGT and Sud-Solidaires are ready.

Philippe Wahl, Chairman and CEO of the La Poste group, is on an official visit to Lozère, this Friday April 12, 2024. The manager’s program is known. Before the inauguration of the renovated post office on avenue du Soubeyran, in Mende, at 11:30 a.m., and a time for discussion with local elected officials “on the transformation of La Poste en Lozère”, at 2 p.m., in the village hall of the Hôtel du Département, he meets, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., with the unions. Sud-Solidaires and the CGT promise to be verbose and put forward three main demands.

Labor conditions

In 2023, La Poste achieved a turnover of 34.1 billion euros (35.39 billion euros in 2022, editor’s note) and a net profit of 514 million euros (compared to 1.06 billion euros). euros in 2022, Editor’s note). “The Post Office is in good health. Not the postal workers”, proclaims Guillaume Martin, departmental secretary of the CGT and professional postman, who regrets deteriorating working conditions.

“It’s normal that we reorganize, argues the CGT leader. Communication methods have evolved. However, where the problem lies is that at La Poste this is done by force. There is psychological and physical suffering. In Occitania, we had around a hundred people who were dismissed for unfitness for work. We have more and more colleagues who request conventional terminations or who resign. We have lost our bearings, the meaning of our work and the confidence in our company. Many – like me – returned as civil servants. We wanted to help the population. Now we would almost be salespeople. This creates disgust.”

Patricia Pellegrin, South PTT deputy secretary, in charge of the general public and digital branch, agrees: “People see us as a public service when we are a commercial service.” She also regrets too few numbers and “too many tours that remain uncovered”. “There is a differential between the prescribed work and the actual work”, adds Guillaume Martin.

Salary increases

“During the last Mandatory Annual Negotiation (NAO), we obtained a salary increase of 3.5%, while inflation in 2023 was at 4.9%,” denounces Patricia Pellegrin, for whom the account is not there. “At the CGT, we are immediately asking for 10%, to cope with the surge in inflation in recent years, as well as a thirteenth month.”

Staff representatives are also demanding better salary increases for all postal workers throughout their careers. “With thirty-one years of seniority and civil servant status, I am at €1,800 net,” takes Guillaume Martin as an example. “Me, I am at €1,950 net, employed with a managerial rank, and after 24 years of seniority”announces Patricia Pellegrin.

The future of departmental postal services

The CGT and Sud are also concerned about the future of the departmental postal service, i.e. the territorial coverage of the company. “In the 2000s, we had around fifty post offices run by postal workers,” underlines the departmental secretary of the CGT. How many are there now? “There are about 25 leftestimates the representative of Sud PTT. In a few years, there will only be eight left in the best case scenario.”

Organizations regret, for example, partnerships with supermarkets, as well as the creation of municipal postal agencies. “This is completely schizophrenic, says Patricia Pellegrin. We are asked to sell more and more products and services, but we are going to put in place these structures which do not offer them all…”

No merger between the Marvejols and La Canourgue sorting centers

The unions received an email from the director of the Lozère mail-parcel services establishment on Tuesday April 9, 2024. He told them that the project to merge the two mail-parcel sorting centers in Marvejols and La Canourgue were abandoned. A victory for the organizations which denounced this intention from the start.
