Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, Inspiration for ‘1+1’ Protagonist, Dies at Age 73 in Marrakesh

In the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, at the age of 73, Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, the prototype of the protagonist from the popular French film “1 + 1”, died.

This is reported by Le Monde with reference to the directors of the film, Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakasha.

“By agreeing to have his story adapted for 1+1 (Intouchables), he changed our lives and the lives of many fragile and vulnerable people. We will remember this dignified, courageous, humble man. We will miss his humor and intelligence ” commented the filmmakers.

Philippe Pozzo di Borgo was born on February 14, 1951: his family belongs to an old Corsican family. He ran a profitable business – the Champagne Pommery winery. In 1993, while paragliding (flights on foot-launched gliders without a rigid main structure), he had an accident, as a result of which the businessman remained paralyzed.

Abdel Sellou, who became his assistant, wrote a book about his acquaintance with Philip, which was called “You changed my life.” By his 21st birthday, he managed to spend two years in prison: Sellu earned his living by stealing. For this, he came to Paris, but, handing over the things of tourists to a local pawnshop, he ended up in prison. He agreed to work for a millionaire, planning to steal something from the house, which he later confessed to in his interviews.

In 2011, the film “1 + 1” was released with Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy in the lead roles. In many countries, he quickly became the leader of the box office: in France alone, in the year of the premiere, more than 19 million people watched the picture. With a budget of 9.5 million euros, the film’s box office receipts in the world exceeded 416 million dollars.

The plot of the picture tells about a wealthy French aristocrat named Philip, who is chained to a wheelchair. As an assistant, the man hires a black guy Driss, who was recently released from prison. At first, he even regrets it, but over time, the new assistant makes the life of an aristocrat saturated with the spirit of adventure.
