Philipp Lienhart is one of the up-and-coming Bundesliga players. He extended his contract with SC Freiburg for the long term last year. He’s not thinking about a change of scenery at the moment, he’s more interested in the international business with the sports club.
Philipp Lienhart can’t work on the even bigger dream of participating in the World Cup in Qatar this week. The 25-year-old will miss the semifinals of the World Cup playoffs with the Austrian national team in Wales because he had previously tested positive for the corona virus.
In May last year, Lienhart made a long-term commitment to SC Freiburg and extended his contract until 2024. “In general, I think to myself: why change something that works well?” Lienhart asks in the Wednesday edition of Sport Bild. “We play good, attractive football and I trust the coaching team to get even more out of me. The club is also developing very well: my path doesn’t have to end here any time soon.”
Lienhart has been playing in Breisgau since 2018 and came from the great Real Madrid, for whom he was allowed to play for a quarter of an hour in December 2015, it was the fourth round match in the Copa del Rey at FC Cadiz (3-1). Lienhart’s development is impressive, as is that of his current employer.
With 45 points after 27 games, Freiburg still has the chance to qualify sensationally for the Champions League. “I would like to play in the European Cup in the future – ideally with Freiburg,” says Lienhart, who will be back in central defense in the top game against FC Bayern after the international break.
