Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson won his fourth straight game when he faced 29 shots in the 4-3 shootout victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. It was also the second game in a row where he saved all attempts during the penalty shootout (7 out of 7).
In the victory against the Penguins, the Flyers made another strong defensive effort where the team acted firmly in their own zone and kept the opponent on the outside.
– I think that many of the games I’ve played recently have looked the same, says Ersson to NHL.com/sv. We are right in the shot lines and cover a lot of shots. It’s great for me when the guys do such a strong job in front of me. I just have to make sure I’m ready in case a puck slips through.
Ersson is 5-3-0 in eight starts this season with the last loss coming on November 7th. He has an 88.5 save percentage with an average of 2.78 goals allowed per game and one clean sheet (25 saves on Nov. 25 vs. New York Islanders)
– He plays with a lot of confidence, says Flyers coach John Tortorella. I think he has grown with every start he has had. He has a mentality where he acts with a kind of cocky calm that rubs off on the team. The last two penalty wins he has shown how good he is.
– I am the same goalkeeper now as I was in October, says Ersson. I know what I can do and believe in myself and my game, even though it can be up and down during a season. It’s just a matter of continuing to work hard and trusting the process.
The Flyers play their next game on the night of Tuesday when a return meeting with the Penguins awaits. The match is shown in Viaplay starting at 01:00.
