Phil Spencer laughs at console sales

Microsoft doesn’t want to sell more than Nintendo and Sony with the Xbox Series X, the goal is to build experiences around gamers.

Invited to speak on the Xbox Series X on Gary Whitta’s Twitch Animal Talking show, Phil Spencer ensured that he was not looking to sell more consoles than Sony or Nintendo because he just doesn’t care about sales figures: “If our approach was to sell more consoles than Sony and Nintendo, we wouldn’t be bringing our games to PC. We wouldn’t put our games on Xbox One, we wouldn’t do xCloud, and we wouldn’t allow people to play on their phones. How many consoles we can belly up against how many consoles another company manages to sell … Whether it was Sony, Nintendo or other companies at the time, that was not our approach.

The boss of the Xbox division of Microsoft went on to say that the US publisher is trying to build experiences around gamers, which explains initiatives like Xbox Game Pass and Project xCloud. The goal is to give the general public access to first-party exclusives via a range of different platforms (Xbox One, Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X).

Now the owner of a commercial version of the Xbox Series X, Phil Spencer believes the console is really quiet: “When I put the XSX in place of my Xbox One X, there was no more noise (…) All my games work and they sound the same as my Xbox One X, but necessarily with a lot more power”. Moreover, he also had a few words for the postponement of Halo Infinite, a title that was to accompany the release of the new Xbox: “I agree with the fans, this is sad news. It’s disappointing for the players and it’s disappointing for us. I had to make the right decisions. You have to take into account the strength of the Halo license, the health and abilities of the team (…) I apologize to the fans because I don’t like to generate expectations and then not fulfill them. But I also think we’ve made the right decision in the long run for Xbox, for Halo, and for our customers.“. Note that the game was planned to be available in several parts …
