It’s no secret that 2022 hasn’t been the best for Xbox, and even the platform’s CEO admits it. In a recent interview with Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, we talked about weak games for the platform.
Compared to PlayStation Horizon’s AAA hits Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok, Xbox didn’t have much to offer in the form of exclusives, and that was confirmed during last year’s spectacular no platform at The Game Awards.
Our commitment to fans is that we must continually release great games for people to play on our platform, and we haven’t done enough in 2022, there’s no doubt about it. And basically, it’s my fault. I am the head of the business.
While 2022 hasn’t been a great year for Xbox, Spencer did mention something positive about the platform’s direction in 2023. He stated that while “every year is a critical one” for Xbox, he also noted that he feels “good” about the momentum. Of course, these are vague terms, but they hint at larger projects or events that may occur in the near future.
And, at least in January, Xbox isn’t that bad. The recent Developer Direct show provided a fun and entertaining way to update Xbox players on new information on existing and upcoming games, and the recent Hi-Fi Rush shady fall was a pleasant surprise.
2023 has just begun, so it’s hard to tell at this point how successful Xbox will be, so we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold over the course of the year.
