Pfizer, which announced this week that it could supply a corona vaccine that is as much as 95 percent effective, does not want to give up its patent protection. This gives the American pharmaceutical company the exclusive right to produce the vaccine. The Netherlands has now purchased 7.8 million doses of the vaccine from the pharmaceutical industry.
“Pfizer’s attitude is very bad,” says Mark Jolink, patent attorney at EP&C, the largest patent office in the Benelux. “Certainly because Pfizer has indicated that it will be able to produce only 50 million vaccines worldwide this year and is aiming for 1.3 billion doses next year. This is nowhere near enough to meet global demand. By keeping everything in your own hands, the production delay is enormous. During that time millions of people contracted corona. ”

Jolink points out that competitor Moderna will release the patent on its vaccine, at least for as long as the corona pandemic continues.
