Pharmaceutical company Sanofi plans to cut jobs

Despite sales growth, the drug manufacturer Sanofi from France wants to reduce its workforce. It has nothing to do with the corona crisis, it is said.

The French pharmaceutical company Sanofi is cutting 1,700 jobs in Europe. 1,000 jobs will be lost in France alone, as the company announced on Friday. Sanofi is one of the pharmaceutical companies that are researching a vaccine against the novel corona virus.

France’s head Olivier Bogillot emphasized that the job cuts had nothing to do with the pandemic. Rather, the background is a strategy announced in December to save two billion euros by 2022. Sanofi is now initially focusing on incentives to voluntarily leave the company.

Sales had risen sharply recently

In the first three months of the year, Sanofi had increased its sales by almost seven percent to nine billion euros. Anti-inflammatory drugs in particular sold better in connection with the corona pandemic.

In mid-June, when French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron visited Sanofi, he announced more than 600 million euros for the research and production of vaccines. Sanofi employs around 100,000 people worldwide.
