US pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty of the charges against him in the case concerning the opioid addiction health crisis that has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in the United States in recent years. At the hearing, Purdue Pharma admitted that it hindered the federal drug agency in countering the spread of opioid addiction, that it did not prevent its drugs from being diverted to the black market and that it provided misleading information to regulatory agencies. He also admitted that he induced doctors to prescribe painkillers and sent them information on patients to whom they could prescribe.
The formal admissions of guilt by the company – which declared bankruptcy a year ago – are part of the agreement reached last month with the Department of Justice which also includes a fine of 8 billion dollars and 225 million to be paid directly to the federal government. Members of the owner family – which under the agreement will not receive criminal charges – will suffer confiscations for 2 billion dollars.
