PHAC Recommends Ervebo Immunogen for Ebola Virus Exposed Individuals

The country’s Public Health Agency (PHAC) reported, cited by CTV News, that the single-dose Ervebo immunogen should be offered to people who have been exposed to the virus.

The entity clarified that the product is not intended for routine immunization.

He added that its use may be considered in pregnant women or immunocompromised people exposed to the virus in a laboratory or healthcare setting, or in infants and children after exposure.

PHAC added that the vaccine can also be used in exceptional situations, such as when a team of health workers expects to directly care for people with confirmed symptoms, which include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and internal bleeding.

Ebola is a highly infectious disease that begins with flu-like symptoms after contact with body fluids such as blood and saliva.

Patients are isolated to prevent spread and given fluids to prevent dehydration, but there is no cure.

In the last two decades, a small number of cases have been recorded outside Africa, none of them in Canada, the report noted.

PHAC said the risk of exposure in the Northern Territory is very low, but those who work in laboratories or healthcare settings are at higher risk, especially if there are non-compliance with infection prevention and control measures.
