Mexico City, Dec 20 (EFE).- The sale of Pfizer’s updated vaccine against covid-19, which is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), started this Wednesday in pharmacies in Mexico.
This biological, prepared from the latest variants of the virus, will be injected in parallel to those supplied by the Mexican Government, the Russian Sputnik and the Cuban Abdala, both without the endorsement of the WHO.
In fact, the public system is using 9 million doses of these vaccines for the 2023-2024 booster campaign against covid-19, which covers practically 25 million people in four risk groups: people aged 60 and over, pregnant women, people with comorbidities and health personnel.
The Federal Commission for the Protection Against Health Risks (Cofepris) gave the green light to the health registration of the Pfizer vaccine on December 7 along with that of Moderna, which allowed its marketing.
In a statement, the pharmaceutical company named some of the centers where its product can be purchased: Farmacias del Ahorro, Farmacias Benavides, Farmacias Guadalajara or Farmacias San Pablo, among others.
Specifically at Farmacias San Pablo, the price of the vaccine is 848 Mexican pesos (about $50) and it will also be administered to girls and boys aged five and over.
At a similar price, 845 Mexican pesos (about $49), it can be found at Farmacias del Ahorro.
While Pfizer’s biological hits pharmacy shelves, Mexico is still waiting for Spikevax, Moderna’s product, to be marketed, a company that hoped to put it into circulation in mid-December once commercial agreements had been closed.
Mexico is the fifth country with the most confirmed deaths from covid-19, with more than 334,000.
