The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pfizer’s corona pill, making it the first on the market. Americans can take the pill from home, and it will prevent further hospitalizations.
However, there is not much access to the pill, which is called Paxlovid, and patients in the risk group are therefore given priority, writes the news agency Reuters. This involves high-risk patients from 12 years and up who weigh over 40 kilos and have a positive coronal test. These will be able to receive a prescription for the pill from the doctor.
Pfizer has 180,000 doses of the treatment available, and between 60,000 and 70,000 of these are now available in the United States. The company says they will have 250,000 doses to the country by the end of January, writes the news agency.
The pill is not recommended for people with kidney or liver problems.
The omicron variant is the dominant one in the United States, and President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced his plan for how the situation will be handled. Increased assistance to the hospitals was part of this, at the same time as the current government also has a strong focus on home tests.
