Mexico, the first country in Latin America to sell vaccines against covid-19
Earlier this month, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) determined that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines met the quality, safety and efficacy requirements for their marketing. The agency became the first agency in Latin America to grant a health registry that allows the free sale of both vaccines.
“In compliance with the total commitment to transparency, under the glass box principle, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) informs that it has granted health registration to the Spikevax vaccine (monovalent XBB.1.5) from ModernaTx. Inc. (requested through its legal representative in Mexico, Asofarma SA de CV) and the Comirnaty vaccine (Ómicron XBB. 1.5) from Pfizer SA de CV,” the organization announced in a statement.
The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ruled out that his administration intends to regulate the price of drugs in the private market. In his morning conference, he said that the Government does not consider it necessary to set prices because the health system guarantees the population’s access to free vaccines.
Estimates of Statesman indicate that in Mexico there are 40 people immunized with booster doses against covid-19 per 100 inhabitants. The figure is one of the lowest recorded on the continent.
