(CNN) — Pfizer is working with the Indian government to get expedited approval for its COVID-19 vaccine, Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said in a LinkedIn post.
“Pfizer is aware that access to vaccines is critical to ending this pandemic,” Bourla said.
“We are currently discussing with the Indian government an expedited approval path for our Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to be available for use in the country.”
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has already received emergency use authorization in the United States and has been used to inoculate millions of Americans.
India currently administers two vaccines nationwide: Oxford-AstraZeneca’s, also known as Covishield, and its own Covaxin, jointly developed by Bharat Biotech and the government-run Medical Research Council of India.
India has also received 150,000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia as the country grapples with a brutal second wave of the pandemic, the government said on Saturday.
