Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) will grant permission to use Pfizer Inc’s vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years at the end of October. This is said by two sources Reuters, Friday (10/9/2021).
The source said the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could have completed enough data from clinical trials if Pfizer did grant an emergency clearance (UAE) vaccine this September. The FDA can make an immediate decision about whether Pfizer’s vaccine is safe and effective in children this age within three weeks thereafter.
The source also told how leading US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci held the meeting online which was attended by thousands of National Institutes of Health (NIH) staff. He had revealed how the FDA might soon give permission for the use of vaccines to children.
“If Pfizer submits its EUA by the end of September, and the data supports its use … the first few weeks of October … Pfizer’s products will likely be ready,” Fauci said, according to the source.
Apart from Pfizer, Moderna is also being studied for its use for children. The media source estimates a decision on the use of Moderna could come around November.
Until this news was revealed, Pfizer and Moderna had not commented. The NIH did the same.
The FDA previously said it would research Covid-19 vaccines for children quickly after vaccine companies submitted their data. Under the standard rules, such emergency authorization can only be granted after the company provides two months of security data to trial participants.
