Fat people have already suffered more from the effects of Covid-19, sometimes even resulting in death, but now they are taking another blow: the Pfizer vaccine appears to be less effective in people who are overweight.
According to an Italian study, obese people produce half the antibodies than normal people after two doses of the vaccine. The researchers want a better vaccine on the market to protect this group with a high BMI. The regular flu vaccine is also known to be less effective in people ‘with heavy bones’.
The researchers keep one more battle to the arm. Of the 248 subjects, all health workers, only 26 were too fat, a number of which makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. Still, Professor Ian Jones of the University of Reading says this result doesn’t surprise him. “It is well known that injections are less effective in obese people.”
If no vaccine is made for obese people, an increased dose may still be a solution, according to the study.
