Pfizer Seeks Early Coronavirus Vaccine Approval in the US

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

US biotech giant Pfizer and German partner BioNTech will seek approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a coronavirus vaccine.

Requests for approval will be made early. This step was taken to deal with a surge in infections and concerns about the impact on the country and the global economy such as earlier this year.

The FDA said the vaccine committee will meet with Pfizer on December 10 to discuss requests for emergency use authorization.

“The FDA recognizes that transparency and dialogue are essential for the public to have confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine,” the organization’s head Stephen Hahn said in a statement.

“I want to assure the American people that the FDA’s process and evaluation of data for a potential Covid-19 vaccine will be as open and transparent as possible.”

However, he could not predict how long the review would continue. Although, the federal government previously said the permits would likely be launched in December.

Pfizer chief executive Albert Bourla called the submission a “significant milestone in our journey to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine to the world.”

The BioNTech / Pfizer shot and another being developed by US company Moderna have been leading the way in the global pursuit for vaccines.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European bloc had also promised to agree on the two before the end of the year.
