Pfizer makes billions on the vaccine, seven times more expensive than AstraZeneca

In both cases, the person who will be vaccinated will need to be given two doses. One dose from Pfizer costs $ 15 (about 336 crowns). AstraZeneca offers it to the European Union for $ 2.23 (50 crowns). The EU announced on Wednesday that it had secured 300 million doses of Pfizer vaccine.

The difference between the two prices is mainly due to the fact that AstraZeneca and Oxford University have agreed not to benefit from vaccine development. Pfizer and BioNTech chose a different path. They even offer their vaccine in the first 100 million doses worth $ 19.5 per dose (438 crowns). In addition, another $ 5,000 (about 112,000 crowns) costs specially designed “ice packs” in which the vaccines will be shipped.

Pfizer developed for his money

Pfizer rejected money from the US government to limit the price of vaccines and invested two billion dollars (44.8 billion crowns) in the research. Although BioNTech used European public money (375 million euros from the German government and a loan of 100 million euros from the Union’s investment bank), this is only a fraction of Pfizer’s investments.

The US alone has ordered 200 million doses from Pfizer. In addition, they secured the opportunity to purchase another 500 million benefits. The European Union agreed on Tuesday to buy 300 million doses from Pfizer and Britain at least 40 million.

This week, Pfizer came up with an analysis that the vaccine that the American company is developing in cooperation with the German BioNTech is 90 percent effective. This is a higher number than experts expected. According to the Daily Mail, the study of the Oxford vaccine should be available within the next week.

Deliveries of both vaccines could begin later this year.

The interest caused by the Pfizer vaccine in the world was taken advantage of by the company’s boss Albert Bourla, who already sold 62 percent of his shares in the company on Monday. The Business Insider server reported, referring to data from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
