Pfizer corona drug reduces risk of hospitalization and death by 89 percent

Pfizer’s corona drug reduces the risk of hospitalization and death by 89 percent. This is evident from new results released by the company. The drug must then be administered within a few days of the first symptoms. The company’s intention is that people can take the pills, called Paxlovid, at home before they are so sick that they have to go to the hospital. The pill will not protect people infected with the corona virus against disease. Pfizer reached that finding after two studies.

One study found that Paxlovid did not reduce the risk of symptoms in 673 adults who are not at risk. However, the drug reduced the risk of hospitalization by 70 percent.

The other study found that unvaccinated high-risk people were 89 percent less likely to end up in the hospital if they took the pill within three days of the first symptoms. This confirms previous results after a test on a smaller group of people.

The results suggest the pill could be helpful for Covid patients who are at high risk of becoming seriously ill. Whether it is beneficial for healthier and/or vaccinated people to take the drug remains to be explored.

The findings “highlight the potential of the treatment candidate to save the lives of patients around the world,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement. “If approved, this potential treatment could be a critical tool to help fight the pandemic.”
