That writes the British newspaper The Financial Times, which has seen the contract.
More than a quarter
The price per vaccine rose at Pfizer by almost 26 percent, to 19.50 euros. At Moderna, this is an increase of more than 13 percent. That vaccine first cost 19 and now 21.50 euros.
At Moderna, the price increase is slightly less than previously agreed, because EU countries purchase more vaccines from the producer.

According to Jochen Mierau, professor of health economics at the University of Groningen (RUG), it is not illogical that prices have increased because the vaccines from AstraZeneca and Janssen are used less. “There was a lot of competition before, but only a few producers remained,” he tells RTL Nieuws.
‘Investments earned back’
At the same time, Mierau has reservations about the price increase. “They have already earned back their investment. Everything they earn now is pure profit.”
According to the newspaper, the contracts with the vaccine suppliers were recently adjusted. The latest deals are said to bring in “tens of billions” a year for Pfizer and Moderna.
Third shot
The demand for vaccines for a possible third shot in particular is driving higher prices. The contracts concern 2.1 billion vaccines until 2023.
The corona vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna may be much more effective after a third shot, according to the first results of a study by the vaccine makers. The antibodies against corona would be five to ten times higher after the third injection than after two injections.
