Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines also protect against Indian variant | Medical

The vaccines from Pfizer / BioNTech and AstraZeneca work almost as well against the Indian variant of the coronavirus as against the British variant. This is shown by a study by Public Health England (PHE).

Two weeks after the second dose, the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine was 88 percent effective against the disease caused by the Indian variant of the virus, according to the Public Health Service study. The vaccine is 93 percent effective against the British variant. The AstraZeneca vaccine was 60 percent effective, compared to 66 percent for the British variant.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock labeled the results of the study as “groundbreaking”. After all, the government is counting on the vaccination campaign to protect the population against an advance of the Indian variant, which threatens to become dominant on the other side of the Channel and could jeopardize the relaxation of the corona measures.

However, three weeks after the first doses, both vaccines were only 33 percent effective. It shows, according to Hancock, how important the second shot is. The British decided to shorten the interval between the two doses to eight weeks for people over 50 and the most vulnerable. The vaccination rate is also increasing in the most affected regions, especially the North West of England and some parts of London.

The coronavirus genome was sequenced for 12,675 cases. Of these, 1,054 were of the Indian variant. The survey was conducted between April 5 and May 16.
