As part of an EU project, the Schongau health food store “Pfifferling” has been delivering to 35 kindergartens and elementary schools every week for a year. More than initially thought.

Schongau – apples and bananas: this fruit is particularly popular with kindergarten and elementary school children in the region. “And when it comes to dairy products, cheese is surprisingly in demand in addition to yoghurt, which also surprises educators and parents,” says Klaus Grundner, owner of the natural food store “Pfifferling” in Schongau’s old town, about the feedback and laughs. Apparently, cheese isn’t that popular outside of the establishments. For a good year now, the “Pfifferling” has been supplying various kindergartens and elementary schools in the region with organic fruit, vegetables and dairy products as part of the EU’s “Healthy Break” program.

Around 2,000 children were initially able to enjoy the food, and now there are even 2,635 children, says Grundner. “The project has been very well received. More and more kindergartens have been added.” The delivery area was initially limited to communities in the Weilheim-Schongau district, but now kindergartens and elementary schools from Lechrain are also included. They had heard that the health food store delivers school fruit and contacted Grundner, he says. The primary schools in Schongau, Lechbruck, Steingaden, Burggen, Schwabsoien, Kinsau, Apfeldorf and Rott are currently supplied as well as all kindergartens in Schongau, Peiting, Altenstadt, Birkland, Ingenried, Schwabbruck, Schwabsoien, Burggen, Lechbruck, Steingaden, Hohenfurch, Kinsau and Apfeldorf , Rott and Denklingen.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

Bureaucratic effort – Everything has to be documented exactly

Every Monday (except during the holidays) they receive 100 grams of fruit or vegetables per child. Some milk products as well. The “Healthy Break” program is financed and promoted by the EU and the Free State of Bavaria to bring children closer to the variety and value of fruit and vegetables and healthy eating habits. The Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry is in charge. The program is also part of the Bavarian Ministry of Education’s exercise and health initiative “Full in Shape”.

“A great thing,” says Grundner. However, government funding also means that everything has to be documented down to the smallest detail. A huge bureaucracy. It was clear to Grundner from the start that school supplies would not simply run next to the shop, but would mean a lot of additional work.

That’s why there are extra employees to pack the boxes and deliver them. In addition, the “chanterelle” needed certificates in order to be allowed to act as a supplier for the program, explains Grundner. And every year you are checked once or twice to ensure that you are complying with all the requirements. Nevertheless: “Tax money is spent sensibly,” says Grundner.

The vast majority of kindergartens and elementary schools in the region are already involved in the school fruit project. If you haven’t done so yet, but are interested, you are welcome to contact the Pfifferling.
