In fact, there are still parents (names known to the editor) who don’t think it’s a good idea to send their daughter to a US college on a scholarship. Of course, there are other ways to reach the goal of professional tennis. But if you haven’t been gifted with the outstanding talent of an Iga Swiatek, why not hone your game at university? And that under professional conditions, which you have to be able to afford as a lone fighter on the WTA or ATP tour.
In any case, Peyton Stearns has emulated Danielle Collins or Catherine (who doesn’t remember “CiCi”) Bellis and earned her spurs in the NCAA competitions in the service of the University of Texas at Austin. Stearns has now celebrated the big coming-out in professional tennis at the US Open 2023, which of course the defeat in the round of 16 against Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova does not change. 44th place in the WTA charts, that’s the reward for New York City’s efforts. Stricker is measured by legends
In Switzerland, too, people know that a good education is important. Dominic Stricker nevertheless chose the conventional route. And he has washed the left-hander up to 87th in the world rankings with three qualification wins and three more wins in the main draw in Flushing Meadows. A new career high. And a development that can certainly be compared to that of the somewhat older Sebastian Ofner, who had exactly the same run in Roland-Garros as Stricker in New York. Appropriately, by the way, that Stricker and Ofner have often trained together in the past few months.

What’s next for Stricker? Hopefully like before. It’s not easy for the Swiss as such. As a young man, you are measured at least by Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer. Two legends. It is not known whether and how Federer keeps in touch with Stricker. Stricker played doubles with Wawrinka in Trier at the beginning of the year in the Davis Cup, and there will soon be a repeat in Glasgow. In contrast to Trier, Stricker will probably be allowed to play individually this time.
